New opportunities for waste plastic recycling industry in 2022

New opportunities for waste plastic recycling industry in 2022

2022-Sep-22

There are five types of general-purpose plastics:

Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP), Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), Polystyrene (PS), and ABS

What is the development prospect and scale of the waste plastic recycling industry? The waste plastic recycling industry has grown into an indispensable resource-based environmental protection industry in economic development. In recent years, with the large-scale application of plastics, my country's plastic recycling industry market has gradually become prosperous. Small and medium-sized enterprises such as Yongquan have emerged and invested actively. The number of enterprises and personnel engaged in recycling and processing of recycled plastics is huge and growing steadily. A group of relatively Large-scale recycled plastic recycling trading market and processing distribution center.

According to the "2019-2025 China Waste Plastics Recycling Industry Development Planning and Investment Prospect Consulting Report" by the China Research Institute and Puhua Research Institute:

At present, there are tens of thousands of plastic recycling companies, and recycling outlets are all over the country. Among them, Zhejiang, Henan, Anhui, Liaoning, Jiangsu, Fujian, Shandong, Guangdong, Hebei, etc. have become developed provinces in the plastics processing industry. In 2020, my country's plastic output will be more than 100 million tons, but the recycling volume of waste plastics will be about 16 million tons, accounting for only 1/5.

From the perspective of the recycling volume of waste plastics in my country, according to the statistics of the Recycled Plastics Branch of the China Materials Recycling Association, the recycling volume of waste plastics in China in 2020 will be 16 million tons (a year-on-year decrease of 15%). In 2020, the epidemic will drop by as much as possible, interrupting the gradual recovery since 2017. Compared with the recycling rate of plastic waste in Lithuania, which is as high as 74%, the overall rate of the Netherlands, Sweden, and Germany is about 50%.

Specifically, 31.9% of the recycled plastics in my country in 2020 are waste PET plastics, with a recycling volume of 4.4 million tons. Waste PE and waste PP account for 20.6% and 19.4% of the total recycling volume, respectively. PET, PP and PE are the most widely used and demanded plastics in the domestic market, and their recycling volume also accounts for a relatively high proportion.

In fact, from automobiles to home appliances, 3C electronics, packaging and consumer goods, there are many products that can achieve plastic recycling. For example, about 60% to 70% of the plastic parts in automobiles can be recycled. At present, the Beijing Institute of Chemical Industry is also researching the recycling technology of tires and composite materials.

In terms of carbon emissions, pollutant emissions, and energy consumption, the "total increment" index is used to evaluate the waste plastic chemical recycling project, which fails to reflect its environmental protection advantages of replacing fossil products and corresponding carbon reduction, pollution reduction and energy consumption reduction. The "life cycle assessment" of landfill, incineration and the use of fossil raw materials is more scientific.

At the national level, the statutory targets for waste plastic recycling will be clarified, and policies should be adopted to encourage chemical recycling and the end use of post-consumer recycled plastics, especially in the fields of food and medicine. Waste plastic leakage and landfill, and improve the recycling rate of waste recycling of low-value waste plastics.

In the past, the development of my country's waste plastics chemical recycling industry mainly relied on the ideal drive, independent innovation and own funds of domestic enterprises. If the policy support is strong, the speed of advancement is fast, and relying on unremitting technological research efforts and the market consumption potential of product diversification.

Global recycled plastics market worth $44.3 billion in 2021

Affected by the Russian-Ukrainian war, energy costs have risen sharply, and the prices of plastics and recycled plastics have continued to rise. The price of recycled PET in Europe even exceeds 400 euros per ton of virgin plastics, and the price of domestic recycled plastics is also rising. At the resumed session of the United Nations Environment Assembly, which ended in early March, representatives from 175 countries signed the "Resolution on Ending Plastic Pollution (Draft)". It heralds the full life cycle management of plastics, thus fundamentally promoting the development of the plastic recycling industry. According to the latest research from BlueWeave consulting, the global recycled plastics market is worth US$44.3 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach US$76.5 billion by 2028. The global recycling market will usher in a "golden development period".

The difficulty of plastic sorting is that ordinary color sorters can only sort according to the color visible to the naked eye using visible light sensors, and cannot identify plastics with transparent materials such as PET/PVC. GroTech iZF series is customized for plastic sorting. It uses infrared technology and can perfectly identify PP/PET/PVC materials. Each channel supports up to 8 cameras (visible camera x2, infrared camera x6) for simultaneous recognition. The actual rejection rate is as high as 99.9%.
