What is plastic sorting?

2023-Jul-19

Plastic sorting refers to the process of separating different types of plastic materials based on their properties, characteristics, or intended recycling or disposal pathways. It is a crucial step in plastic recycling and waste management systems.

Plastic sorting is necessary because different types of plastics have unique properties, such as polymer composition, density, color, and heat resistance, which determine their suitability for specific recycling processes or end-use applications. By sorting plastics, they can be directed to the most appropriate recycling or recovery method, maximizing their value and minimizing environmental impact.

Plastic sorting can involve various technologies and techniques, including manual sorting, mechanical sorting, and automated sorting using advanced sorting machines. These methods rely on visual inspection, optical sensors, near-infrared (NIR) sensors, electromagnetic fields, or other means to identify and separate different types of plastics.

The sorting process typically involves the following steps:

Collection: Plastic waste is collected from various sources, such as households, businesses, or recycling centers.

Pre-Sorting: Larger contaminants or non-plastic materials, such as metals or glass, may be manually or mechanically removed to ensure that only plastic items are processed further.

Sorting: Plastics are sorted based on their properties, which can include visual characteristics like color and shape, as well as physical or chemical properties like density or polymer composition. Sorting technologies, such as optical sorting, NIR sorting, or other methods, are used to identify and separate different types of plastics.

Diversion: After sorting, the different types of plastics are directed to their appropriate recycling or disposal pathways. Plastics suitable for mechanical recycling are typically cleaned, shredded, and melted to produce new plastic products. Plastics that are not suitable for mechanical recycling may undergo chemical recycling or energy recovery processes.

Efficient plastic sorting is essential for achieving high recycling rates, reducing contamination in the recycling stream, and ensuring that plastics are properly processed according to their specific properties and recycling capabilities. It plays a significant role in promoting a circular economy and minimizing the environmental impact of plastic waste.
