Learn about how the plastic color sorting turn plastic waste into treasure

Plastic is an important organic synthetic polymer material with a wide range of applications. However, the "white pollution" caused by waste plastics is becoming more and more serious. However, plastic recycling and sorting have become an important project. There are five types of general plastics, namely polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS).


Plastics’ chemical resistance, light weight, and sturdiness determine their important uses in life or in industry. With the advancement of technology, it is very difficult to sort waste plastics when recycling them, and how can they be economically cost-effective?


Before using various plastic recycling methods to reuse waste plastics, most of the plastics need to be sorted. As shown in the figure above, this is the ABS crushed plastic produced on the market. In order to separate these different types of plastics for sorting and recycling applications, a plastic color sorter was produced.


Plastic material sorting machine is a device that uses photoelectric detection technology to automatically sort out heterochromatic particles in granular materials according to the differences in the optical characteristics of materials. The selected material enters the machine from the hopper at the top. Through the vibration of the vibrator device, the selected material is conveyed along the channel, enters the observation area of the sorting room, and passes between the sensor and the background plate. Under the action of the light source, according to the intensity of the light and the color change, the system generates an output signal to drive the solenoid valve to blow out particles of different colors to the waste hopper, and the good selected materials continue to fall to the finished hopper, so as to achieve the purpose of selection.


All plastics can be sorted by the color sorter, but the plastics need to be crushed, broken into fragments or granular before sorting.

As long as there are color differences, multi-color mixed plastic materials, no matter what kind of mixing, can be screened out. It’s just that you can only choose one at a time, and you can choose a mixture of plastic materials with multiple colors.
